This card with sketch is an original copy which was produced as a way to raise money for a soldier who was left incapable of working after being in the Andersonville prison camp. Sketch shows an image of Union soldier, E.W. McIntosh of Co. “E”, 14th IL Infantry, as he appeared at parole camp weighing sixty-five pounds after his seven- month long confinement at Andersonville. Below image are the words, “READ OTHER SIDE”. Reverse of card explains McIntosh’s dire situation and appeals to the reader to help the former soldier by purchasing these cards for twenty-five cents and to support his lectures.
Wooden frame measures 5 ¼” by 7 ¼”. Frame has two- sided glass, so both front and back of card may be viewed. Card has yellowed with age and shows spotting in areas. Below wording on reverse, someone wrote their name in pencil. Image and wording are clear. [SL]
