Post-war bust view in coat & vest, with an ascot-type striped tie. A pin with a chain is attached to his tie; another pin is on his vest. Printed on the bottom border of the mount is, “CLARENCE L. BRACKETT, Co. E”. Photographer’s info on reverse: C.E. Brown, Chelsea, Mass.. Period ink inscriptions on reverse: “Clarence A. Brackett / Co E 2ed N.H.Vol / Chelsea Mass.”
Overall very good condition; light soiling & wear around edges.
Clarence A. Brackett was a 21 year old resident of Antrim, NH when he enlisted on 5/21/61 as a Musician. On 6/3/61 he mustered into Co. E, 2nd NH Infantry. 7/20/61 transferred to Co. C. Deserted on 7/25/62. Re-enlisted on 3/25/64 as a Corporal; on 4/12/64 he mustered into Co. E, 17th Vermont Infantry. Promoted to Sgt., no date given. Listed as POW 9/30/1864 Poplar Springs Church, VA (Paroled); Wounded 9/30/1864 Poplar Springs Church, VA; Paroled 3/10/1865 (place not stated). Lived in Chelsea, MA after the war. He died in Everett, MA on 10/14/1909.
A wartime photo of a dashing-looking Brackett appears on page 162 of the book, A History of the Second Regiment, New Hampshire Volunteers, in the War of the Rebellion, by Martin Alonzo Hays, 1896. The caption beneath the photo references his desertion, stating that Brackett “had a chronic disagreement with his officers, which became so hot that he “discharged himself” after a year’s service with the 2nd New Hampshire. Apparently he did not receive any punishment for this act. [ld]
