That is the period, blue pencil inscription on the reverse of the card mount of this image, with an additional black ink note at bottom: “The above is in the handwriting of Reginald Heber Disbrow / Member of the 37th Regt. N.G. of New York / (Clara H. Thomas.)” The image has nice tones and clarity, measures 8-1/4” by 5-1/2” and is mounted within a narrow light blue borderline on period cardstock measuring 11-1/2” by 9-1/2.”

During the Gettysburg campaign the regiment was called up for thirty days, serving June 18 to July 22, and assigned to the 4th Brigade,1st Division, Dept. of the Susquehanna and were posted to defend Harrisburg. They were  engaged twice in skirmishes with Jenkins’ Confederate cavalry covering Ewell’s thrust at Harrisburg: first on June 30 at Sporting Hill (also known as Oyster Point, in the area of Camp Hill) and the second on July 1 near Carlisle. In the first fighting they lost 1 officer and 3 men wounded, and in the second, another 2 officers and 2 men wounded and 3 captured.

The image is taken from a hill looking down the slope at the camp and shows rolling farm land and trees with some houses in the middle ground along a road from lower middle left to upper middle right. The camp shows white canvas tents arranged in company streets leading away from the camera with officers’ tents, etc., running the width of the camp in the foreground. Some scattered soldiers and a couple of stacks of muskets are visible at left. At right there are more soldiers in front to the tents and in the company streets.

The 37th was based in New York City and were called up for two other tours of duty as well: three months in the Middle Department from late May to early September 1862, and later,  for thirty days from May 6 to June 6, 1864. The Gettysburg campaign was clearly the high point of their service. Unsourced online citations indicate they did pretty well, along with another New York National Guard outfit and some artillery inflicting some thirty or forty casualties on their opponents.  [sr][ph:L]
