This is an albumen photo, of a charcoal sketch, made from a tintype. This is a large piece with image being 8.75” x 10.75” on a 12.25” x 14.75” mount. A printed label is below the image. No photographer’s backmark or imprint.
The mount shows some wear with minor chipping on edges and corners. The image is clear and clear showing Marr seated and in uniform. He has forage cap with crossed sabers on his head and has a Colt revolver, a sword, and a Sharps carbine in his lap.
Printed label reads, “W.T. Marr, Company E, 6th Virginia Cavalry, Ashby’s Brigade. Enlarged from Tin-type taken in Charlestown, Va., May, 1862. Saber shown presented in person by Col. T.S. Flournoy.”
William T. Marr was a carpenter when he enlisted as a Private into Company “I” of the 18th Virginia Infantry on April 24, 1861. He was discharged four months later for rheumatism. On April 1, 1862, he enlisted into Company “E” of the 6th Virginia Cavalry. He was captured at Brandy Station in June 1863, and soon after paroled from Old Capitol Prison in Washington DC. He was transferred on December 16, 1863, into the Lynchburg Light Artillery. Unknown discharge. He lived in Staunton, Va., until he died on March 12, 1912 and is buried there in Thornrose Cemetery.
