Image shows President Taft standing at center with the Mayor of Rochester, New York. They are flanked by GAR officials, the mayor’s reception committee and the President’s military aid and local police officers.
Seated in rows on either side are numerous GAR veterans with many wearing dark double-breasted jackets and matching trousers. All the men hold their hats in their laps. One has a slouch hat with a 6th Corps badge while two other men have kepis with 6th Corps badges on the crown. Most of the men also wear GAR membership badges and reunion ribbons.
Off to the left and in the left background is a band. Their bass drum is painted with “3RD INFANTRY N.G.N.Y.”
Bottom center of the photograph has a small printed caption that reads “PRESIDENT TAFT AND PARTY, G.A.R. OFFICERS AND COMM. AND MAYOR’S RECEPTION COMM., OF THE 45TH NATIONAL ENCAMPMENT G.A.R. AT ROCHESTER AUG 23RD 1911, PHOTO TAKEN AT HOME OF T. B. DUNN.”
Contrast and clarity are excellent. There is some dirt from age and storage between the glass and the image along one side.
Framed the photo meas. 46.00 x 16.00 inches. Frame is of dark brown wood minus any decoration. The photographer was Mr. Almeron Newman. [ad] [ph:L]
