Photograph shows seated studio view of Egbert Olcott in uniform. He wears a double-breasted frock with Lt. Colonel shoulder straps. His cap is partially out of frame on a table next to him. The image has light water stains that do not detract. There is some damage and loss to the mount in the upper, left side. This is not visible while photo is in the frame.

A period pencil identification is on the back of the mount, “Col Egbert Olcott”. Under that is a more current pencil note, “Lt. Col. Egbert Olcott. Given to me by Jim McNulty of [street address]. Col. was a in law relative of the McNultys or Dakins. / Major, Lt. Col. & Bvt. Col. 121st N.Y.V.”

A gilted oval mat is under glass in the old wood frame. Wood finish shows some minor scuffs commensurate to its age. Image frame backed with a thin sheet of old wood. Picture frame wire attached to back.

Egbert Olcott was 24 years old when he enlisted in Albany, NY on September 9, 1861 as a Private in Company C, 44th NY Infantry. He was discharged for promotion on November 27 when he was commissioned as 1st Lieutenant of Company B, 25th NY Infantry. On April 17, 1862 he was promoted to rank of Captain. Olcott was again discharged for promotion on August 23, 1862 to be commissioned a Major in the 121st NY Infantry. Promoted to Lt. Colonel on April 10, 1863. Olcott was wounded and captured in the Wilderness on May 6, 1864 and confined at Macon, Georgia. He was exchanged August and returned to duty to be promoted to Colonel on August 16. He was Mustered Out on December 13, 1864. Brevetted Colonel for actions at Cedar Creek. Muster Out revoked and he was restored into Field & Staff of 121st NY. He was Mustered Out on June 25, 1865 at Hall's Hill, Virginia. Egbert Olcott subsequently served in US Army from May 11, 1866 until March 26, 1868. [jet] [ph:L]
