Very nice albumen of R. Stewart Hart, 1st lieutenant of Company F, 17th New York in what looks to be the original wooden frame.
Image shows Hart holding his Model 1850 foot officer’s sword in his lap. He wears a dark single-breasted frock coat with shoulder straps, sash and sword belt with the pattern 1851 officer’s belt plate.
Image has excellent clarity and contrast. Above the subject’s head there are five scattered rub spots otherwise the image is clean and bright.
Photo is in an oval mount with a gold border. Bottom center of the mount is stamped with “PARIS’ GALLERY - LATE ROOT’S – 363 - BROADWAY” in four lines. Bottom left corner of the mount shows some minor water staining but it is limited to this one area.
Wood frame meas. approx. 16.00 x 18.00 inches and is 3.50 inches deep. The interior border has a beaded decoration while the outer border has a floral decoration with a scalloped edge. The edge shows some minor wear but overall it is in very good condition.
Reverse has a brown paper backing with the subject’s name and unit written in modern ink. It appears the backing was removed at one time and glued back in place. Perhaps the identifying information is repeated on the back of the image but we cannot know for sure without removing the paper. Frame also bears some period stenciled numbers.
Robert Stewart Hart was from Mount Kisco New York. He was commissioned a 1st lieutenant in Company F, 17th New York Infantry on May 22, 1861. While still in camp in New York he came down with the measles and died on June 24, 1861. He was buried in St. Mark’s Church Cemetery in Mount Kisco, New York. The GAR Post in Mount Kisco was named after him. [ad] [ph:L]
