This image is a full-standing view of a soldier wearing the distinctive uniform of the 14th Brooklyn. The soldier is posed with one hand on his hip and the other resting on the back of a chair. The subject is young, has close cut hair and a mustache. He wears a dark blue short jacket with a single red diagonal stripe on each sleeve. These diagonal lines are part of an inverted chevron worn on the lower sleeve. The jacket is closed at the throat and bottom by a hook and eye attachment and the open front placket is lined on both sides with 15 brass ball buttons. The open placket exposes a red vest underneath that is held closed by 13 visible brass ball buttons. The subject also wears baggie red trousers with white leggings and black brogans.
It should be pointed out that the whole image has been tinted. The carpet is red with a pink and green floral pattern. The chair is red with brown wood trim and the curtain by the chair is a dark green.
The image itself meas. approx. 7.50 x 9.50 inches and is in very good condition. The colors are strong and the details are good. There is one very small white spot on the subject’s shoulder that looks to be dust from inside the frame with one or two age spots on the background.
The frame looks to be the original period frame. It meas. approx. 13.25 inches wide x 15.50 inches tall x 2.25 inches deep. The inner border is a painted silver wood with a linear decoration. The next level of the interior is wood painted with a mustard base with a red, green and dark brown marbling. The top boarder is wood painted or stained a very dark color with a wonderful scroll and leaf design carved into each corner and painted white. There is some chipping to the corners and some minor wear from rubbing and paint spots on the frame. The reverse has the original wood slat with wire ready for hanging.
The 14th Brooklyn or 84th New York State Militia is a well-known organization with a history dating back to 1847. During the Civil War the regiment served in the Army of the Potomac and for a short time in 1862, the Army of Virginia. The regiment saw action in 47 battles and skirmishes to include 1st and 2nd Bull Run, South Mountain, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Wilderness, Spotsylvania and Bethesda Church. The regiment’s highest loss came on July 1, 1863 at Gettysburg where it lost 139 casualties. The regiment was mustered out at New York City on June 14, 1864.
This is a fantastic image of an unknown member of one of the more famous and hard fought units in the Union Army.
