By Matthew Brady-Backmark: "Brady's Album Gallery. No. 445. GENERAL STONEMAN AND STAFF. near Richmond, June 1862. Image measures 2.75 x 4", and is mounted against heavy white card in heavy gilt frame measuring 5.375 x 6.75", w/contemporary velvet stand-backing. Stoneman and four staff members and a black servant are posed before a tent w/a dog laying on ground in foreground. A sergeant and lieutenant stand behind Stoneman (seated to the far right) and two lieutenants. Black servant sits in foreground next to the dog. Stoneman holds same white card that he held in a similar image taken on the same day in front of the same tent with the same dog but with a slightly different set of officers. Obviously this image is part was a photo shoot of Stoneman and variety of staff officers in small groups. Image sharp and exceptionally clear. Clipped slightly at corners. Frame excellent. Overall VG plus plus.
A West Point trained veteran, George Stoneman had a very uneven Civil War career. He commanded a division during the 1862 Peninsula campaign, and a corps during the battle of Fredericksburg, but then was relieved of command of the cavalry corps in the aftermath of the disastrous "Stoneman's Raid" made in conjunction with the equally disastrous Battle of Chancellorsville. He restored his reputation somewhat with his performance in divisional command under Gen. Sherman during the closing months of the war. He remained in the regular army until 1871, then retired to California, where he served as Governor 1883-87. He died in Buffalo, NY, 5 Sept, 1894.
Fine image of a major Union commander w/ staff and servant.
