Image of prominent North Carolina soldier matted with white card w/dark olive trim, 6” x 8. Bust portrait image, lightly specked, w/thin white line running diagonally from top, under his chin from right to left. Tiny light-yellow smudge at his right temple. Else VG.
A resident of Warren County, NC, Robert Ransom was an 1850 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy, who served during the ‘50s with the 1st U.S. Cavalry on frontier duty, including action against Sioux Indians while policing settlers in Kansas. As the Civil War commenced resigned, soon while accepting a state commission and becoming colonel of the 1st NC Cavalry. Promoted to Brigadier he commander a brigade with Huger’s division during the 1862 Peninsula Campaign. In 1863 he was returned to Carolina where he was promoted the Major General, and in 1864 served under Genl. Beauregard against Butler’s forces during the Bermuda Hundred action. Later assigned as Jubal Early’s cavalry commander during the summer Valley Campaign, Ransom was engaged at Ft. Stevens and the Battle of Monocacy. In August 1864 Ransom was relieved of command due to illness, and was assigned to rear echelon administrative duties through the conclusion of the war. In he post-war he served as City marshal at Wilmington, NC, and a civil engineer at New Bern, NC, where he died in 1892. [His older brother Robert commanded the 35th North Carolina Infantry, attained Brigadier rank and served as North Carolina U.S. Senator, 1873-1895]
