This framed photo measures 15 1/2 – inches by 13 ½ inches overall in a floral edged frame, with the photo itself 9 ¾ by 7 ¾ -inches on a gray mount in a cream-colored mat. The image shows a gray-haired and gray-bearded Confederate veteran astride a white horse in the street in front of house with steps and narrow front porch visible, along with a side porch. He wears a dark brimmed hat with insignia on the front and a gray Confederate uniform with a stripe down his trouser leg and impressive galloons on his coat sleeve, indicating a substantial rank, showing above his large white gauntlets. His stirrups have hoods and a set of saddle bags at the rear of the seat, completes the military look.
Written in old black ink on the on the gray mount at lower right, just below the photo, is “Given Oct. 20, 1915.” There is no further identification or location, but we not this date corresponds with the 28th Annual Meeting of the Grand Camp of the Confederate Veterans Department of Virginia, held October 19, 20 and 21, 1915, in Fredericksburg. The photo might be of Grand Commander Samuel Griffin, who had been elected for 1914-1915, or possibly Thomas L. Tate, elected as Grand Commander for 1915-1916, which was announced in the program for the meeting. [sr][ph:L]
