This large black and white image meas. approx. 23.75 x 16.00 inches. It is mounted on brown stock and comes in the original wooden frame. All together the framed piece meas. approx. 29.50 x 21.50 inches.
Image shows approx. two hundred members of Company B, 315th Machine Gun Battalion arranged in rows, some sitting and some standing, posed in front of a decorative iron fence. All the men wear their OD green wool tunics trousers and overseas caps. A close examination reveals a few are wearing division patches on their left shoulder but most are not.
Hand written in ink on the mount is the caption “CO.B, 315TH MACHINE GUN BATTALION, BRETTE, FRANCE 1919.”
The image is clear with good contrast but does have some light discolorations in the area of the sky. The mount has some surface dirt and discolorations to match the image. Frame has a very nice stripping to the grain and is in good condition.
The 315th Machine Gun Battalion went overseas in June of 1918 and saw action in the Somme area as well as at St. Mihiel and the Muse-Argonne. The battalion served in France with the 80th Division. During its service the division lost 880 men killed and 5, 149 wounded. The 80th Division returned to the United States in May of 1919.
Most World War One unit photos tend to be of the “yard long” variety. This one is a little unusual due to its size. [ad] [ph:L]
