Image shows approx. 80 GAR veterans lined up in a street most likely in Rochester, New York. At center of the group is a GAR banner that is difficult to read due to the angle the photo was taken from. It clearly displays a GAR membership badge at center flanked by the letters “GAR.” Across the bottom is “ROCHESTER, N.Y.” There is also a Post number that looks to be “1” but this is not definite.
Lined up to the right of the banner are veterans in dark suits and slouch hats. Each hat has the plain wreath with “GAR” at center. Many of the men are wearing ribbons and some are holding smaller “GAR” American flags. Mixed in are some children dressed in white.
To the left of the banner are veterans dressed in a more uniform style. They wear either single or double-breasted dark coats with waist belts and rectangular GAR buckles and the conductor style hat. Most of the hats are arranged with number “1” over “N.Y.” in the wreath with “GAR” below the wreath. Each man also has a musket by his side. Perhaps this is the Post drill team? Several of the men wear reunion ribbons. All wear a carnation in their lapels.
Contrast and clarity are good. Framed the photo meas. 39.50 x 9.25 inches. Frame is of black wood minus any decoration. No photographer is named. One edge of the wood frame is missing. [ad] [ph:L]
