Image is mounted on a heavy stock paper that meas. approx. 11.00 x 14.00 inches. The view itself meas. approx. 7.50 x 9.75 inches and shows three humeri removed from wounded soldiers. The bones are mounted and numbered for identification and show signs of trauma.
The first one is specimen #2595 and belonged to Private Charles Naylor of Co. I, 11th New Jersey Infantry who was severely wounded in the left shoulder at Chancellorsville and was later transferred to the Veteran Reserve Corps. The middle specimen is #3954 and belonged to Private Simeon Cole of Co. G, 106th New York who was wounded severely in the left shoulder at Monocacy, Maryland. He was discharged on June 13, 1865. The last specimen which is #1180 belonged to Private George Riggs of Co. E, 12th New Jersey who was severely wounded in the right shoulder at Chancellorsville. He was discharged in late July of 1863.
The image is clear and crisp and clean. The mount does have some light surface dirt around the edges. The reverse has a paper label that is in good condition and is headed as follows “SURGEON GENERAL’S OFFICE / ARMY MEDICAL MUSEUM / PHOTOGRAPH 123. THE HEADS OF HUMERI, EXCISED FOR GUNSHOT FRACTURES.” The rest of the label displays the information given above concerning the soldiers the specimens came from.
