Closed the desk meas. approx. 12.00 inches long x 11.00 inches wide x 2.50 inches tall.
The exterior is covered in a very dark leather with a greenish tint and a crosshatched decoration with tooled scrollwork and lines. The top of the box has a fold-over flap with a carrying handle at top. The front edge of the flap is scalloped and has a brass escutcheon that holds part of the lock which slides into a base that is attached to the body of the box. The exterior condition is fair to good with numerous small scratches and scuff marks as well as small amounts of leather loss consistent with use and age.
When unlocked the front of the box folds down to form a flat, hard writing surface. This swivels up and down on a pair of brass hinges. The hinges are attached to the body of the box but have come loose from the folding surface. Four small brass screws would fix it. The interior writing surface is covered in red Moroccan leather.
With the front writing surface folded down the back of the box remains vertical. This back section of the box is divided by two vertical and one horizontal doors. The first door on the left opens to reveal five sewn leather loops for holding pens and pencils. The door on the right opens to reveal a leather pouch with flap. Once these two doors are opened the rest of the back of the box is for storage. The horizontal door at the bottom lifts open to reveal a wooden platform for holding pens, pencils and an inkwell. Present with the box is a large square pencil eraser and a stylus. The whole interior is lined with red Moroccan leather and is in very nice condition.
With the desk is a small notebook from the 1960’s or 70’s showing the drawing of this type desk with a note that reads “DR. FRANCIS LAND GALT SURGEON ON THE SUMTER & THE ALABAMA” and below the drawing is “PART OF DISPLAY IN CONFEDERATE MUSEUM RICHMOND VA.” The point of the note is to state that a desk similar to this one can be found in the Museum of the Confederacy and was used by Dr. Galt on the CSS SUMTER and CSS ALABAMA.
