This period sewing kit comes to us in a very nice condition. The exterior is finished in a textured black leather with gold silk ribbon borders. As is typical of age and use, the outer portion that remained exposed when rolled/folded shows some minor fading and light crazing with only one spot of outer layer loss.
The interior is in excellent condition with no rips, tears, or fabric loss. It is lined with a layer of finely polished brown-red cotton or silk and a single pocket of the same material remains functional at the top. Moving toward the center (unfolded), two pieces of white wool flannel store 12 needles that do not appear to have been used. A red velvet tab separates the swatches from the base, which is a rigid cylinder. It is closed by a door that was to be secured by a black cotton loop, which was intended to slip over a small closure button (not present but button stitching remains). Three small cards of unused cotton thread (white, brown, and tan) remain inside. Each end of the rigid base is finished in a rich, brown silk.
When unfolded, the length reaches 8” and the width stands at 4.75”. No closure tabs or strings seem to have been attached, meaning it relied on the rigid cylindrical base and the form of the leather to remain closed.
Both a luxury and a necessity to the serviceman of the Civil War, this example appears to be an unused item that would be ideal for display or to round out a personal item militaria collection. [cm][ph:L]
