Presented here is a Civil War era woman’s dress accessory in the form of a broach made of braided human hair. Hair jewelry and hair decorations were very popular at the time and were usually made from the hair of family loved ones and presented as a lasting sign of remembrance and love. Long, human hair strands were intricately and tightly braided together to form thick strings that in turn were handcrafted into special jewelry forms. This beautiful braided and intricately woven broach measures approximately 1½” long and has a 1” diameter. Crossed bow w/two teardrop shaped design. Center of bow engraved floral design in brass w/pin attachment on back. Has minor repair to hair under center piece. Women wore this type of jewelry accessory for special occasions attached to their garment. This specimen is a wonderful example of hair jewelry and would make an ideal addition to any collection.
