This is a full sized hardtack cracker that has a pencil inscription on the face. Unfortunately it is broken into two pieces with some surface loss. The break goes horizontally across the top section. Item meas. approx. 3.00 x 3.00 inches with 4 rows of 4 holes each. The back of the cracker is in poorer condition with numerous cracks. Overall the broken pieces are holding together well. Written in pencil on its face is “M. JOYCE, ---- L, 46 REG.” The missing surface is in front of the letter “L” and is believed to have contained “CO.” for the abbreviation of the word “Company.”
A quick Internet search failed to produce a solid ID. Perhaps more research will prove rewarding. With a Company designation of “L” the regiment would have to be one of cavalry or artillery as most infantry companies stopped at the letter “K.”
