This original artifact of the Civil War is an all-in-one wooden handled combination spoon, knife, and fork utensil set. Very popular with the troops, this type of personal accouterment was sold by regimental sutlers to thousands of soldiers throughout the war. Shaped like a large pocketknife, specimen was made in England and is maker-marked “GEORGE / WOSTENHOLM / SHEFFIELD” on the blade ricasso. Utensil has a fine rosewood handle and contains a large, swing-out metal three-tine fork and a retractable swing-out, 3½” long blade knife at one end. Opposite end holds the large bowl German-silver spoon. All metal is dark gray and shows scattered rust oxidation from wear and use. Wood is tight and has acquired a deep, rich patina. Light surface grime overall. A fine, original eating tool that would display with any Civil War soldier’s personal accoutrement collection.
