Offered here is a fine matching set of eleven four-tine silver forks.

They measure approximately 6.75” long. These are of the “Fiddle” pattern which was very common in the 19th century. All are lightly engraved on the handles with the family name of “Snowden.” The ends of the tines show some wear, otherwise these pieces are all in fine condition.

William Montgomery Savage (1814-1892) was born in North Carolina. He moved to Ohio and was in business as a jeweler and silversmith in Columbus for 52 years. He trained with his father John Y. Savage. He became one of the largest jewelers in Ohio. His first shop was a small frame building placed upon large rollers like wheels, so that in case of fire, the building could be drawn into the street away from the surrounding buildings that were all made of wood. In later years, he joked that it was the only jeweler's store in Ohio on wheels. The business operated in several locations until settling at 77 South High Street where it remained for the final 36 years, until Savage died in 1892.

A very nice matching set of vintage silver forks from the William A. Turner collection.  [jet][ph:L]
