An apostle spoon is a spoon with an image of an apostle or other saint as the terminal of the handle, each bearing his distinctive emblem. Apostle spoons were particularly popular prior to the Reformation. They symbolize the Last Supper of Christ in the company of the Apostles. Apostle spoons were especially popular in England, but were also found in large numbers in Germany.

This is a fine example of a silver “apostle” spoon. Likely 17th or 18th century. There are no maker’s marks or touch marks, only engraved “HHB” on the back of the bowl. Measures approximately 6.5” long. It has a very attractive “fig” shaped bowl, similar to the English spoons of the era. The finial atop the handle is an undetermined apostle with ware to raised areas. The stem and figure were apparently cast and are hollow, which has left a few very small pin holes along the sides.

A very old, and very interesting “spoon.” From the William A. Turner collection.  [jet][ph:L]
