Cased set of twelve matching coin silver dessert spoons. Spoons measure approximately 4.75” long; leatherette-bound case measures 5.25” x 5.5” x 1.25”.

All handles are engraved with initials “WMB”. See item #1266-943, a matching cased set of dessert knives.

These are the “JOSEPHINE” pattern, designed by John Gorham in 1855, all with personalized engraving to handles, “WMB”, and each marked “PAT ‘55” and “COIN”. This pattern features a foliate and scroll design on handle with a leaf cluster on underside of bowl at the stem. Gold tone on bowl and running to midpoint of handle.

The leatherette-bound case is constructed very much like photograph cases of the period. The lid features impressed geometric patterns and is held closed with two small, brass hooks. The thin leather forming the hinge has separated and an old and poor attempt at repair was done with cloth tape. The interior is lined with white silk and green velvet. An oval label pasted to the inside of the lid reads, “M.W. GALT & BRO / JEWELLERS / 354 / PENN. AVENUE, / WASHINGTON.”

M.W. Galt & Bro. is an American luxury jewelry and specialty goods retailer from Washington, DC. It is known for fine jewelry, sterling silver, watches, and high-end customizable personal accessories. Galt is one of the oldest jewelry companies in America, due to being one of the first officially established businesses in the nation's capital as of 1802. Founded by James Galt in Alexandria, the shop became famous in the 19th and 20th century by being a popular shopping destination for many prominent figures in American history. The company’s ledgers had a list of distinguished patrons including Presidents, First Ladies, diplomats, and renowned visitors from around the world. The imprint of Galt appears on a vast number of valuable items of great historical interest, many of which became museum relics such as Abraham Lincoln's pocket watch. In 1825, James Galt decided to move his business to downtown Washington, DC, across the Potomac from Alexandria, with the new location situated on Pennsylvania Avenue.

All spoons are in very fine condition, case shows light wear. From The William Turner collection.  [jet][ph:L]
