Item Code: 179-1100
Victorian pewter tankard. Features several horizontal raised bands and a handle. Stamped “HALF PINT” just under lip near top of handle.
There is an oval verification mark: “[crown] / VR / 67”. This signifies that the measure has been inspected by an official Weights & Measures Inspector and found to be of the correct capacity. There is also an indistinguishable round hallmark stamped on the inside, bottom of the piece.
It became a country-wide legal requirement to stamp all measures with a verification mark in 1835, though some areas had been doing so before this. Prior to 1878 each town generally had its own style of mark. After 1879 a uniform style was adopted consisting of a crown, the monarch’s initials (i.e., VR, ER or GR) and a number which signifies the location.
Tankard is slightly tapered and measures 3.5” tall by 3.15” in diameter at the base. There are minor dings and scratches as to be expected from age and use. [jet] [[ph:L]
