This is a small, metal, collapsible drinking cup from the Civil War or post war era. The maker-marked device is made of a pewter-like alloy, sometimes referred to as Britannia metal. In the collapsed position, this ingenious device consists of a pewter base with two separate but each slightly larger metal bands resting within the largest outer band. When the device is used for drinking, the outer bands are pulled up and extended to form a watertight metal cup that measures 3" high. Specimen has a 2½" diameter when fully extended. Maker's stamp of "H. FILLEY & SONS / PHILADA". Cup edges are rolled over and its entire exterior and interior surface wear a bright satiny sheen overall. The matching circular tin case and case cap are excellent and exhibit much of the exterior dark gray finish. Interior wears a semi-bright finish with slight oxidation. Artifact is in excellent condition.
