This item is one of the most encountered and most often seen eating utensils of the Civil War. This knife, fork and spoon combination is the size of a large pocket knife and has a similar shape. One side has a folding spoon and fork while the opposite side has a knife. Both sides are detachable at center by the use of two tongue and groove joints. When separated you have a half with a spoon on one end and a fork on the other while the other half has a knife. The base of the fork is nicely marked “ARMY KNIFE UNION.”
The condition of this particular piece is good. There is some discoloration from age and storage on the spoon bowl and fork and the knife has been sharpened. The wood handles are also in good condition.
