Lemaire was one of the better-regarded optical instrument makers in the 19th century. This is an elegant pair of opera glasses in their original carrying case. The binoculars are gilt brass and mother-of-pearl, with the faces of the lenses nicely marked by Lemaire with the Paris location. All of the mother-of-pearl panels are in place and intact, as is the serrated wheel for extending them, though the screw adjusting mechanism is stuck and needs some tinkering. The gilt brass is bright and this is a very showy pair. The lenses are in place. The case is good, but shows some scuffs, some wear spots to the leather surface, and an open seam, maybe from a rough night at the opera, but nice color to the blue lining and with the bee-embossed button to the spring catch in place.
We think they would display nicely with an elegant Victorian woman’s purse, and a gentleman’s top hat cane, and maybe a pocket pistol, too. [sr][ph:L]
