Thomas F. Guion of New Orleans will be familiar to Civil War collectors as a dealer in “gentleman’s furnishings” at a “fancy and variety” store at 20 Camp Street from at least 1841 to 1869 (and possibly a tad later, not being listed, however, by 1874.) His business included sporting goods and firearms, both rifles and pistols, with his name appearing on imported English Tranter revolvers.

This pair of opera glasses, from the more peaceful side of his operation, are fashionably fitted with mother-of-pearl panels, bears his name and address in elegant, fine Old English lettering around surface of the mother-of-pearl eyepieces: “T. F. Guion / New Orleans.” The underlying body is brass. The barrels have their full complement of long, vertical, mother-of-pearl panels in place and in good condition. The eyepieces with the firm name and address are both in place, though on one side the short panels side below the eye piece are largely missing down to the bridge. The adjusting knob, like the other portions, is fitted with serrated mother-of-pearl wheel. One of the eyepiece lenses is also missing. The brass, where exposed, has a medium, aged tone, with some thin dark spots.

These would make a nice addition to a display relating to the city’s cultural history, as well as its complicated role in the Civil War before and during the Federal occupation.  [sr][ph:L]
