The wooden board meas. approx. 6.50 x 6.75 x 0.50 when open. The board is made of inlaid alternating squares of light and dark wood, each with a hole at center for accepting the chess piece. The board folds in half on brass hinges when not in use and is held closed by a brass hook and post. The wood on the playing surface shows light to moderate scratching from use and age. Three of the holes have small cracks but otherwise the board is holding up well for its age.
All of the white pieces are present. They look to be made of bone and are in good condition. The red pieces are also all present. These look to be made of painted wood. One pawn is a little larger than the others and painted a duller red. This is an obvious replacement. One of the red knights has a loose horse head but it can be situated properly for play.
This is an excellent item for any Civil War camp display or to lay out with the contents of a haversack or knapsack. [ad] [ph:L]
