FINE, FOUR-FOLD COLLAPSIBLE BRASS TELESCOPE

$125.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: M22479

This antique optical instrument from the Civil War era is a very appealing, four-fold collapsible telescope in very good condition. Telescopes contain a powerful magnifying lens or mirror that makes distant objects appear larger. Made of brass, this device is constructed with four cylindrical folds or shafts that collapse within each other. When the folds are fully extended, the telescope measures 16¾” long and collapses to only 6” in length. The main lens has a 1¼” diameter and has its brass press-fit protector. Void of any maker’s mark, the artifact is functional and in excellent condition. Exterior body retains its black bridle leather veneer sheathing in good condition with slight scuffing. All folds, collars and trim of the telescope are made of solid brass and wear a smooth, mellow bronze patina. No dents or dings. No case. This optical accoutrement is a clean and pleasing telescope specimen from the mid-19th century that would enhance any instrument collection.
