This is pair of shoe buckles measure about 2-¾” by 2-1/4” and show some very delicate, intricate work. The central frame with teeth and tongue is iron, cast and chased in low relief, and the underlying outer frame is brass, cast with a border made of disks. These disks were drilled through the center and the tops fitted with mother-of-pearl disks, also pierced. These are held together by silver pins, peened on the underside flush with the bottom of each disk, each with an eight-pointed star in relief on the top, with the white mother-of-pearl forming the background for each. The mother-of-pearl disks overlap slightly, following the curvature of the buckles. A single disk with star sits at either end of the oval and a slightly larger star with rounded points, more like a rosette, is set on a disk at what would be the top and bottom of the oval buckle. The silver stars have naturally tarnished a bit from age, as has the ironwork, showing it was plated to match the stars.
These are quite wonderful buckles, probably mid to late 18th century, though we know they can run late from wear in formal court or ceremonial garb. They are impressive in the amount of fine detail they show regardless. [sr] [ph:L]
