This little volume looks very much like the small pocket testaments of the period but this one is titled “THE BOOK OF PRIVATE DEVOTION: A SERIES OF PRAYERS AND MEDITATIONS” by Hannah Moore and published by Robert Carter & Brothers of New York, New York in 1864.

Book is a hardcover wrapped in light brown cloth with geometric type decoration on the front. Covers show heavy surface dirt and light wear throughout.

Binding is tight. Interior shows surface dirt and yellowed pages from age.

Item meas. approx. 3.00 x 4.75 and runs 253 pages.

Inside front cover has a period pencil inscription that reads “Mrs. Polly S. Goslin from her son John.”

A search of the Census records shows a Polly Goslin age 50 living in Russell, Alabama with her husband Simeon and seven children, one of whom was named John who was 20 years old at the time.  [ad][ph:L]
