Housed in a forest green, gilt blind-stamped case lined in blue velvet with blue silk lining in the top, these elegant gold plated English shoe and knee buckles date about 1830 or so and were likely intended for court or ceremonial dress. Both sets are decorated with raised floral scrolls and spirals on the surface of their gilt frames. The larger, shoe, buckles are given a false leather center to mask the functional buckles underneath that would actually secure the tongues of the shoes and are fitted with a hinge to enable that to be done before flipping the decorative buckle frame into place. They are also marked “L” and “R” to mark their intended shoe. The smaller buckles were intended for the lower end of the breeches, just below the knee, closing the leg along with buttons and also helping the stockings stay in place.
These are in excellent condition with bright gilt finish. The only wear we see is on the reverse of the knee buckle frames from contact with the breeches and a little to one rear edge on each of the shoe buckles, very minor and not visible from the face. These would display very nicely with a court or diplomatic sword, or other very formal attire for a public occasion. [sr] [ph:m]
