19th century papier-mâché spectacle case with an oil painted hunting scene featuring four classical (Roman or Greek) figures mounted on horseback along with dogs closing in on the prey. Measures 5 ½” in length, 2 ¾” width. This case expands at the opening top area to 1”. Very fine thin leather gussets located on both sides of the case acts as an accordion type expansion.
CONDITION: Black painted surface and hunting scene shows some age crazing and slight darkening of the central painted panel. A very small area located at the top of the scene has a delaminated chip. The front panel on the scene side has come partially separated on the back, due to drying out of the glue over the years.
Nice Victorian example of artwork. [ph:L]
