When opened the lantern meas. approx. 3.00 inches wide x 3.75 deep x 5.25 inches tall. Two sides have windows with a gold stenciled linear decoration. The third side is solid with the same gold decoration around the edges with “MINOR’S PATENT JAN. 24, 1865” stenciled at center. The decoration is very visible throughout and the Patent information is strong.
The back panel is solid with a looped handle at one edge. This back panel swings open to expose the inside of the lantern. Attached to the inside of the back door is a small holder for extra candles. There is also an arm with a cylindrical base for holding the lighted candle. The arm protrudes through the back panel which holds the arm in place and keeps the candle from moving.
The U.S. Patent Office issued Patent #46,011 on January 24,1865 to John A. Minor who was the inventor of this interesting little item.
Overall the item is in good condition. There is some minor wear and scratching on the outside but one side of the roof is missing some of the original finish. [ad] [ph:L]
