Pocket knife features a mother of pearl handle. Blade shows light surface rust but freely moves. Shield was carved from a shell. Reverse has a heart scratched in the surface with “CIVIL WAR” hand inscribed. A hole is present near the point.
Note is written in pencil. It reads, “Jane, Please keep this tiney little knife in the family, it was given to me when I was a few months old by a little girl nabor. This shel heart my father made in civil war with his knife. I used to wair it. Keep these pictures of Mother-Father”.
It was common for Civil War soldiers to carve items like this in camp. This is a nice collectible that a daughter of a soldier saved and passed to her family, and now can be a great addition to a display of soldier or civilian items. [sl]
