Charitable and religious organizations were anxious for the spiritual welfare of the young men going off to war and a variety of small pocket-sized booklets were printed up for distribution to the departing volunteers. This one is, “prepared for the defenders of their country by the Presbyterian Board of Publication, No 821 Chestnut Street, Phildadelphia.” With gilt-stamped embossed brown-cloth-over-card covers, the booklet contains advice on the proper attitude toward the war and the enemy, proper conduct, moral behavior and resisting temptation, along with a selection of prayers, psalms, hymns, and a couple of pages of practical advice to soldiers such as that, “a flannel shirt or broad band of flannel around the abdomen is a good precaution against disease.”
Excellent condition and a key piece of ephemera found in the personal effects of many soldiers. [sr]
