Original marker-marked, US-stamped black bridle leather scabbard that housed the Model 1868 trowel or entrenching bayonet. No bayonet included. The large triangular-shaped scabbard comes with its scalloped, seven-rivet leather frog and its funnel-shaped brass tip. Black leather body, though strong, shows moderate to heavy cracking and flaking. Brass tip has a mellow bronze sheen and is missing its two small copper rivets. Scabbard’s leather frog bears the maker stamp that is just partially readable but a clear government stamp “US”. A rare, hard to find M1868 trowel bayonet scabbard.
