Black leather scabbard for the Springfield bayonet. The leather body is in nice condition with a good tight seam running up the back with no surface crazing or finish loss. Typical brass scabbard tip attached with two tacks. Arched leather frog is in good condition with moderate surface finish loss and cracking overall. The large v-shaped stitching on the frog has all separated. The frog is attached to the scabbard by stitching and two brass rivets. (Two rivets were used from 1859 to early 1863). This scabbard was well treated with a leather preservative and is soft and pliable. During this treatment, something rigid must have been inserted into the scabbard as the shape of the “channel” is now more of an oval than a triangle. Item for sale is a scabbard only…there is no bayonet included. [jet]
