VERY NICE CONDITION EARLY CIVIL WAR U.S. CAVALRY HOLSTER

Item Code: 286-1332

This is a very good condition early-war holster for a .36 caliber revolver with full military flap, wide belt loop secured by stitching and three rivets, toe plug, and sewn latch tab. The stitching is tight and all elements are in place and secure. The color and finish are very good, showing minor crazing to the flap from flexing, but just some rubbing and finish loss on the upper body where the edge of the flap would rub against it and on the belt loop from flexing and creasing from carrying the weight of the pistol. Even so, the underlying color is dark and the wear is not very noticeable. It has both good condition and a nice untouched look, not having been treated with any dressing or preservatives, and has escaped applications of shoe polish to dress it up.

The latch tab is full length and secure. The single, straight line of stitching securing it is a sign of early war construction, with a rivet reinforcement added mid-war and the stitching then also changed from a straight line to a semicircle around the rivet. The leather has good body, not hard and not flimsy, still showing the impression of a revolver it must have housed for some time. The toe plug is also complete and tightly in place with the stitching intact. These have often been pushed out by the muzzle of the pistol.

Civil War cavalrymen were typically armed with saber, pistol, and carbine, though it took some time to get regiments fully armed with carbines. This is a very good military issue holster, with full flap and configured to ride on the trooper’s right side with the butt forward. This would be a key part of a cavalry display, nicely complete a good condition cavalry belt rig, and look great alongside a .36 Cal. revolver, standard issue for cavalry along with the .44.  [sr][ph:L]
