Several holsters of this configuration for navy size revolvers are illustrated in Meadows and are seen in period photos. They key point of identification is the use of an elongated flap extending in to a billet fastening over a brass stud mounted farther down the scabbard than on the regulation styles with separate, sewn latch tabs. This one holds the pistol with the butt to the rear and has a single narrow belt loop mounted on the reverse that is secured by a single rivet at top and bottom. It is also embossed with a dynamic pattern of long, slanting lines that are marked at some intersections with a large multi-rayed asterisk or starburst embossing and at other points with crescents bearing serrated line infills.
The finish is very good: some crinkling on the flap of course, but only minor abrasion or finish loss at the latch tab and forward flap edge. This is a very nice Civil War non-regulation military holster that shows up for different models. (Meadows even shows one for a dragoon.) This one is for a navy size revolver like the Colt 1851 or 1861 navy. [sr]
