Intended for cavalry issue, the 1912 pattern holsters for the new Colt .45 automatic pistol of 1911 had swivels to keep the pistol vertical even when the wearer was mounted. This one was follows the pattern for mounted use and has the rare USMC cartouche on the flap. The holster body and hanger are crisp, with the holster showing just a tad lighter than the hanger. The belt hook is in place and the swivel still retains its leather safe on the reverse to avoid staining the uniform. The leather leg strap is in place as well. Only a little verdigris needs to be cleaned off the rivet heads and fastening stud. The holster is in superb, near unissued condition. Only a few marks on the underside of the flap show a pistol was ever in it. Very few marines served mounted, but a number did, serving as guards at depots and on special duty. Perhaps the most famous unit was the mounted detachment of the American legation guard in Peking. [sr]
