This is the standard issue double bag knapsack made out of tarred canvas. The bag opens to reveal two inside pockets. One side has a single pocket with a tie-down flap closure. The other has four flaps that come together and buckle into place to form the pocket.
All the roller buckles and straps for the inner pockets remain. All of the separate pieces that make up the leather shoulder straps are present and in good condition. All associated brass hooks and iron roller buckles found on the straps and bottom of pack also remain. The surface of the shoulder strap leather features some crackling and flaking. An inspector’s mark is present on one strap; last few letters are hard to see, possibly “R. Valentine”. The tarred canvas is remains in very good condition with only a few very small holes or splits. All four anchors for the blanket straps are present along the top. [jet] [ph:L]
