This is the standard issue double bag knapsack made out of painted canvas. The bag opens to reveal two inside pockets. One side has a single pocket with a tie-down flap closure. The other has four flaps that come together and buckle into place to form the pocket.
All the roller buckles and several of the leather ties for these inner pockets remain. All of the separate pieces that make up the leather shoulder straps are in worn condition. Their surface features some severe crackling and flaking. Marker mark is present as is the inspector’s mark and date of 1864. Several minor splits in the tarred canvas overall with one large tear running nearly half way across the central fold. All four anchors for the blanket straps are present along the top.
Should display well. [jet]
