Here is a good example of a Model 1839 leather cartridge box for the M1841 Mississippi rifle.
Constructed from heavy black bridle leather, this box measures 6.5” across, 4” high, and is 1.75” deep. Outer flap has rounded corners with no sign of the typical scalloped edge found on most military cartridge boxes. There are no cuts for a brass plate. The leather closure tab is all here but split at the left side of the finial hole. It is attached to the flap with rivet and a half circle of stitching. Side “ears” remain firmly stitched to the outer flap; there is no inner flap. An implement pouch is sewn to the front and remains complete and in very good condition. On the front of the box, above the implement pouch there is a strong maker’s stamp, “C.S. STORMS / N.Y.”
Box still has its original cartridge tin. This tin never had any dividers, and has many dents showing good use in its day. A brass finial is securely attached to the box bottom. Backside of box has a pair of belt vertical loops that are attached with rivets and stitching. No roller buckles, never had them.
In overall good, strong condition; from the Texas Civil War Museum collection. [jet] [ph:L]
