This classic Confederate manufactured cartridge box with its over-the-shoulder strap is a 10 out of 10 for condition and completeness! The box when discovered, decades ago had its rare South Carolina state seal breastplate attached. The plate, always of great value, was foolishly separated from the sling and box by the collector, a pecuniary decision. The consignor, an advanced collector of Confederate items, for over 60 years, purchased the unit minus the plate in around 2011. He had a relationship with the former then deceased owner going back to the 1960s.He was able in 2017 to track down and retrieve that actual original South Carolina state seal plate and place it back on the sling exactly where it originally sat.
The dark brown shoulder strap is rather crudely made compared to the Yankee equivalent. It measures 48 inches of exposed length beyond the box itself it is 2 inches wide. There are no breaks or repairs. Attached to it by 2 iron loops (fitting perfectly at the exact location so it sits upright when worn across the breast) is the rare, stamped brass lead filled South Carolina State Seal breast plate (worth on its own $5000). It is in excellent condition showing wear consistent with that of the box. The box itself is a dark brown leather. The design is based on the 1861 pattern U.S infantry cartridge box for the.58 caliber rifle musket. The box is complete with both roller buckles, loops and tabs in place and secure. The seams are tight. The implement pouch with its own flap and tab are in place. The inner flap of the box still has the side ears sewn in place. Both magazine tins are present inside and with 2 magazines we can date the box prior to 1864. The flap measures 8 inches by 9 inches. The box itself is 7 inches by 7 inches and is 1 3/4 inches deep. There is a large lead finial. The box is actually in wearable condition. If you want one of the best Confederate Infantry boxes ever offered than here it is! [pe][ph:L]
