This an 1861 pattern U.S infantry cartridge box for the.58 caliber rifle musket bearing several sets of owner initials and a painted unit designation on the outer flap. The box is complete with all buckles, loops and tabs in place and secure. The seams are tight. The implement pouch with its own flap and tab are in place. The inner flap of the box still has the side ears sewn in place. Both magazine tins are present inside, though one lack the divider in the upper tray. The leather has not been treated with any polish, dressing or preservatives. The surface shows some rubs, scratches, crazing and some finish loss on the edges from wear or spots on the top of the outer flap from flexing. Most of the finish on the latch tab is gone.

The box has a large “LF” carved on the outer flap. The inside of the flap also has a thin “JE” carved in it and a large “TC” in black paint near the lower edge, so the box changed hands several times. The outer flap also has a bold, stenciled designation and rack number in a slightly faded yellow paint showing rubs, but fully legible, reading “G.W. B.C. / No. 161.” We do not know what the initials signify.

The box follows the Allegheny Arsenal style in having the vertical waist belt loops centered under the horizontal shoulder belt loops, but we so no maker or contractor marks. The use of a single line of stitching to secure the latch tab for the outer flap is a diagnostic of the 1861 pattern, with a rivet reinforcement added for the March 1864 pattern and the omission of an embossed US predating July 1864.

This is a solid cartridge box in good condition.  [sr][ph:L]
