A very good condition black leather cartridge box bearing a cartridge box plate consisting of an entwined “NG” for National Guard, and a superimposed “7” for the 7th Regiment. These are known to be from the 7th New York National Guard, a unit with a long history of service including mobilization in the early days of the Civil War. This is made of black leather, with a good surface showing nice color and only minor rubs, scratches or impressions. The latch tab and brass finial are in place and secure, as is the insignia plate.  This dates to the 1870s-1880s or so and was designed for carriage on a shoulder sling, likely white web, with two horizontal loops fitted on the back for a sling to pass through. There is no sign the box was fitted with buckles on the bottom so the ends of the sling likely had leather stops of some sort or buckled back on themselves. Three additional loops were cut on the back of the box, perhaps to accommodate wear by a shorter guardsman at some point.

This is a nice, clean, solid example from a unit with a long history many of whose members, in the Civil War for example, had extensive field service in other units as well.  [sr][ph:L]
