This is a great condition Confederate cartridge box, made of black leather, complete with both outer flap and inner flap with side ears in place, as is the implement pocket with its own cover, fastening tab and retention loop. The latchtab and brass fastening stud are in place and secure. Both tinned iron magazines are inside, with the divider in place in the upper tray of each. The box was constructed like a rifleman’s box, with provision for wear on a waist belt only. Both those belt loops are in place, sewn to the upper middle of the rear of the box and tall enough to show slightly above the top edge of the box. Omission of loops and buckles for a shoulder sling was a cost and labor saving measure, though prewar US boxes for riflemen omitted them and early in the Civil War, when buff leather, the preferred material for shoulder slings, was hard to get, issue of boxes to troops without slings was authorized for a time (See Paul Johnson’s excellent book on Union cartridge boxes for details.)
The leather has strong color and surface, with some rubs and wrinkling, unevenness, and some stiff creases with slight cracking to the finish on the lower outer flap, but no real flaking or finish loss. The side ears are in place on the inner flap though some of the stitching near the front has parted. In general, the seams of the box are tight and the stitching is well done, if not as dense as on Federal boxes. But, despite a pressing need to supply the troops, they did take time to add an ornamental impressed line along the edge of the inner flap.
This is a very strong example of a no-doubt-about-it Confederate cartridge box intended to free up the movement of the soldier by omitting the shoulder belt, much in keeping with the general trend toward light infantry during the period as well as the need to save time and resources in the manufacture of military gear.
