P1861 CARTRIDGE BOX – LONGLEY AND CO. 1862

This very nice cartridge box is a pattern of 1861, designed to support the armament of the .58 rifle muskets in widespread use by the US military during the Civil War.  Medium sized plates were most commonly issued to New York State Volunteers in notably quantities.

In a rare, complete condition already, this box sports a very scarce pre-early war medium sized box plate, in contrast to the more common wartime regulation plate found on most intact boxes.  The strap is in supple condition but does not retain the eagle breast plate that was once affixed. There is some light wear to the outer finished layer of leather – common among boxes that saw use and extended storage. Overall, stitching is complete and tight. There is some light crazing on the outer flap from use, but leather remains strong and supple. All sub inspection markings are strong and clear.

The inner accessory pouch is in excellent condition and both iron attachment buckles are complete.  The inner tins are present with light oxidation.  The inner flap of the box is clearly marked “LONGLEY AND CO. LEWISTON, ME 1862” in three stacked lines.  The outer flap measures 8” x 6.75” and the depth/width of the body of the box measures 1.75”.

If you are looking to add a complete cartridge box to your collection or a display, this is surely an excellent candidate with absolute wartime provenance.  [cm][ph:L]
