This US cartridge box is maker marked on the inner flap by Gaylord and is the standard 1857 pattern using belt loops on the back, shoulder belt buckles on the bottom, and a latch tab on the front that are all secured by stitching alone and no rivets. This has its original cartridge box plate secured on the back of the outer flap by a thin leather thong that appears original and untouched. The soldier has personalized the box by adding his initials below that thong, which appear to be “JHK” and adding other details above it that we cannot quite decipher, but might lead to a full identification.
All loops and buckles are secure. The latch tab is in place and secure, though shows a glue repair to a tear on one side of the fastening hole. The inner flap, implement pocket with its own flap and tab are in place. The semicircular side ears are missing from the inner flap, likely from continued use in opening and closing the box. The box has good color though the outer flap and back of the box show crazing to the finish overall and flap shows some flaked areas. The stitching on one rear upper corner of the box gave way at some point (and has been restitched.) All signs of extensive field use. There is one magazine tin still inside, missing the divider in the upper tray. We have not taken the plate off to look for markings. The thong securing it looks original and should not be disturbed. The Gaylord maker’s stamp is very good.
This is a good example of an early war US infantry cartridge box that was actually issued and used. The soldier’s initials inside the flap also give a chance of reuniting it with its personal history. This is a good example of a regulation, early war US cartridge box. See Paul Johnson’s excellent “Civil War Cartridge Boxes of the Union Infantryman” for a full discussion of the development and different patterns of infantry cartridge boxes. [sr][ph:L]
